The initial settlers were involved in farming and industrial activities. A few years later, manufacturing took over the town and it became famous for producing different products like wooden shingles, carriages, needles, satinet and charcoal. Copper and granite were harvested among other natural resources which were available in large quantities.

The population of Burlington, Connecticut drained during the middle of the 19th century as people moved to neighboring communities to seek better opportunities. After the Civil War, the town went back to its rural lifestyle.

However, Burlington has significantly changed in the past 100 years and has seen rapid development. Several reservoirs have been built to harness the abundant water supply. The roads have been improved and many small businesses have been set up to provide different services. There are various educational institutions in Burlington, Connecticut which have been established in the recent decades.
